The Fěte du Citron in Menton, France, runs concurrently with the Nice Carnaval, entertaining visitors in these popular Riviera towns. They both feature day and nigh time parades, floats, daily flower markets, many side events and fireworks. Vendors take advantage of this opportunity to market giant float inspired balloons, and all manor of Festival swag. Tourists are entertained by gigantic float characters and the chance to dress up as your favorite fruit, pirate, animal, or float character is open, imagination unlimited but glitter necessary!!. It is not uncommon to see many festival goers of all ages wandering the streets at all hours and hopping onto public transport with arms of children, flowers, and masks. Carnaval runs from 12 February to 2 March while the the Fete de Citron begins 25 February and ends on 2 March. Citron's theme this year celebrated a Voyage in the Galaxy with lemon studded astronauts and a visit by ET, while the Carnaval of Nice had a Maritime theme with plenty of giant toothy sea animals and sea exploration themed floats. The Menton Festival uses an impressive 140 tonnes of citrus fruit to decorate its gigantic structures and floats. We are still trying to find out what is made of all of the fruit after this Fete each year. Each event is good for the winter economy, attracting an estimated 240,000 + visitors each year.
